01 - THE ORIGIN
A name born from Meiji-era philosophy
Gojoko is derived from Gojyoko — a 19th-century Japanese credit cooperative conceived by philosopher and agrarian reformer Sontoku Ninomiya (1787–1856). A self-educated peasant who rose to prominence, Ninomiya built a system of mutual financial aid grounded in four timeless principles.
These cooperatives offered low-interest loans to samurai and farmers, operating entirely on principles of trust, diligence, and giving back. The modern fintech company carries this spirit forward — helping UK credit unions and CDFIs compete against high-cost lenders using cloud infrastructure.

BRAND BRIEF
"A logo for a fintech named Gojoko. Foundation — Japanese philosophy. Pioneer — banking infrastructure and technology. Personality — personal financial advisor who is a fiduciary."
02 - BRAND STRATEGY
Three pillars that anchor every design decision
Before a single mark was drawn, the brand brief was distilled into three distinct but interlocking identity pillars. Each pillar defined not just what Gojoko does, but how it feels to interact with it.
FOUNDATION
Japanese Philosophy
Rooted in Hōtoku ethics. The brand carries restraint and earned trust. The hard geometric form draws from Japanese architectural precision — structure that lasts, built without ornamentation.
PIONEER
Banking infrastructure and Technology
Gojoko is cloud-native. The bold geometric letterform signals engineering confidence and systemic precision — the visual language of infrastructure that operates at scale, quietly and without fail.
PERSONALITY
Personal Financial Fiduciary
Not a faceless institution. The arrow embedded in the mark signals direction, guidance, and intent. It points somewhere. It has purpose. It represents the fiduciary promise made to every member.
03 - DESIGN PROCESS
From brief to final mark
01
Discovery and Research
Researched Japanese traditional colour theory (Nihon no Dentō-shoku), historical cooperative aesthetics, and the visual language of premium fintech brands. Reviewed Mastercard's brand principles for spatial clarity reference.
02
Brief Definition
Wrote the design brief: a logo for a fintech named Gojoko. Inspired by Japanese philosophy. Colour primary — traditional Japanese red (beni). Letterforms to evoke both cultural depth and digital precision.
03
Typographic Exploration
Explored multiple wordmark styles — uppercase geometric, mixed case serif, custom lettering. The 'J' became the pivot point: its descender allowed for an elegant typographic flourish unique to the name "GoJoko."
04
Lettermark & Icon
Developed a standalone lettermark — a stylised 'G' drawn with the fluid restraint of Japanese calligraphy, enclosed in a circle to evoke completeness, cooperation, and the concept of ma (negative space)
05
Color Palette & Refinement
Added purple (murasaki) alongside traditional red. Purple symbolises imperial exclusivity in the Heian period — perfect for a premium brand. Final palette: deep purple primary, crimson accent, gold tertiary
06
Final System & Handoff
Delivered the full logo system: wordmark (large/small), lettermark (dark/light mode), sub-brand "Gojoko Tech" variant, and integration into the Murakami Design System component library.
04 - COLOR SYSTEM
A palette drawn from Kuge tradition
In the Heian period (794–1185), purple was reserved exclusively for the imperial court. Paired with the ceremonial gold of Japanese mon seals, this palette communicates earned authority — not borrowed prestige.

07 - DESIGN DECISIONS
G
The bracket is the G
The C-bracket reads simultaneously as the letter G and as an open door — the opening Gojoko creates for credit unions entering digital lending. Form and meaning are inseparable in this mark.

The arrow has intent
紫
Purple earned its role
Murasaki — reserved for the Heian imperial court, gives the brand weight without aggression. It communicates premium trust through a colour that has meant exclusivity and care for over a millennium.
◑
Two golds, one intention
The arrow uses warm sand gold on dark backgrounds, olive-gold on light. The same colour token — calibrated separately so each version carries identical visual authority across every surface.
⇌
System from day one
The logo was designed inside the Murakami Design System from iteration one. Every colour token feeds directly into the loan application component library — no translation, no friction, no drift.
